Y Care International

I accompanied staff and donors from Y Care International who were visiting young beneficiaries from the YMCAs/YWCAs across the West Bank. Terry Waite, OBE President and Adam Leach CEO of Y Care International were joined by Clive Bailey, trustee from the Austin Bailey Foundation. The aim of the work is to create opportunities for disadvantaged young people through the local YMCAs and YWCAs to help and support them gain skills and jobs. The West Bank has some of the highest unemployment figures in the World and youth unemployment is at 80% despite 40% of these young women and men holding degrees. The YMCAs also work to rehabilitate children and young people who have been detained, imprisoned and injured by the Israeli security forces. For example, 20-year old Mohammed, who was shot in the head in an unprovoked attack by soldiers, has been supported by YMCA Hebron to help him recover and open and run his own shop. Other work involves enabling disabled people to integrate into society and offering practical support to farmers, to enable them to become self-sufficient and earn an income.
